College Football Week 14 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: Jalen Hurts, QB, Alabama
With Tua Tagovailoa sidelined due to injury, Hurts led Alabama to a second-half comeback and a SEC title on Saturday. The junior completed seven of nine passes for 82 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 28 yards on five carries. One of those carries was a 15-yard touchdown that was the game-winning score for the Crimson Tide with just over a minute to go.
Defensive Player of the Week: Byron Murphy, CB, Washington
Murphy picked off two passes, returning one interception for a 66-yard touchdown in the third quarter to lift Washington to a 10-3 win over Utah in the Pac-12 Championship.
Coach of the Week: Bill Clark, UAB
UAB’s program didn’t exist two years after it was disbanded following the 2014 season. However, Clark quickly rebuilt the Blazers into a bowl team in 2017 and guided the program to a Conference USA title with a 29-27 victory over MTSU on Saturday.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Ryan Day, Ohio State
Ohio State’s offense recorded 607 yards (7.0 per play) and 45 points to win the Big Ten title over Northwestern.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Brent Venables, Clemson
Clemson’s defense held Pitt to just 10 points and 200 overall yards in Saturday night’s win in the ACC Championship. The Panthers had only eight passing yards, while the Tigers recorded two sacks and nine tackles for a loss.
Team of the Week: Alabama
The Crimson Tide claimed their fifth SEC title in seven years by defeating Georgia 35-28 in Atlanta. Coach Nick Saban’s team trailed 28-14 early in the second half but rallied behind backup Jalen Hurts. After Tua Tagovailoa was sidelined due to injury, Hurts completed seven of nine passes for 82 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 28 yards and one score. Hurts’ clutch performance, along with a standout defensive effort in the second half, lifted the Crimson Tide to a perfect 13-0 regular season.
Freshman of the Week (Offense): Darriel Mack, QB, UCF
Mack completed 19 of 27 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns and added 59 yards and four rushing scores in UCF’s win over Memphis.
Freshman of the Week (Defense): Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford
Adebo recorded three tackles, two pass breakups and two interceptions in Stanford’s win over California.
