With the second weekend of the 2018 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team and freshman from Week 2:
College Football Week 2 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: Kelly Bryant, QB, Clemson
Bryant consistently delivered key plays when Clemson needed it on Saturday night. The senior quarterback connected on 12 of 17 throws for 205 yards and a score and led the team on the ground with 54 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive Player of the Week: Deandre Baker, DB, Georgia
Baker led the way for Georgia’s defense in Saturday’s win against South Carolina. The senior recorded six tackles, one pass breakup and an interception.
Best All-Around: Greg Dortch, WR, Wake Forest
Dortch had a prolific performance in Wake Forest’s win over Towson in Week 2. He returned three kicks for 85 yards, took two punts back for touchdowns and caught seven passes for 94 yards and a score.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Eddie Gran, Kentucky
The Wildcats recorded 454 yards (8.0 per play) and went 9 of 13 on third-down attempts in Saturday night’s win over Florida. Running back Benny Snell led the way with 175 rushing yards, and quarterback Terry Wilson was efficient through the air (11 of 16) while also contributing 105 yards on the ground.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Danny Gonzales, Arizona State
Arizona State’s defense held Michigan State to 377 total yards (5.7 per play) and allowed only one touchdown in four trips inside of the red zone in Saturday night’s win. Gonzales’ group also limited the Spartans to 4 of 12 on third-down conversions and allowed only 63 rushing yards.
Team of the Week: Kansas
The Jayhawks ended a 46-game losing streak in road games by winning 31-7 at Central Michigan on Saturday.
Freshman of the Week (Offense): Adrian Martinez, QB, Nebraska
Martinez’s debut was cut short by injury, but the freshman was impressive in his first game at Nebraska. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 117 yards and two scores.
Freshman of the Week (Defense): Merlin Robertson, LB, Arizona State
Robertson recorded eight tackles (1.5 for a loss), 1.5 sacks, a pass breakup and a forced fumble in Arizona State’s win over Michigan State.
Best All-Around Freshman: Terrence Horne, WR, USF
Horne was instrumental to USF’s win over Georgia Tech. The freshman caught two passes for 11 yards and a touchdown, ran for eight yards on two carries and recorded 264 yards on kickoff returns with two scores.
