With the fourth weekend of the 2021 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team, and freshman from Week 4:
College Football Week 4 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas
Burks led the way on offense for the Razorbacks in Saturday’s huge win over Texas A&M. He grabbed six receptions for 167 yards, which included a catch and run that went 85 yards for a touchdown. Burks also added a 14-yard rush, giving him 181 total yards of offense.
Defensive Player of the Week: Charlie Thomas, LB, Georgia Tech
Thomas recorded eight tackles (4.5 for a loss) and 2.5 sacks, while also recovering a fumble in Georgia Tech’s upset over North Carolina.
Team of the Week: NC State
NC State snapped an eight-game losing streak against Clemson with a 27-21 overtime win on Saturday. The Wolfpack used 238 passing yards and four scores from quarterback Devin Leary, while the ground game chipped away for 148 yards against a tough Clemson front. NC State’s defense limited the Tigers to just 4.4 yards per play and two third-down conversions on 11 attempts. There’s a long way to go in the 2021 season, but the victory over Clemson puts NC State squarely in the mix to win the ACC.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Kendal Briles, Arkansas
An injury to quarterback K.J. Jefferson slowed the Razorbacks in the second half at times, but Briles still had a terrific gameplan and overall approach for attacking Texas A&M’s defense. Arkansas finished the win with 443 yards (6.5 yards per snap), averaged 27.3 yards per completion and posted a zero in the lost turnover column.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish suffocated Wisconsin’s offense by allowing only 314 yards over 69 plays (4.6 a snap) and 13 points in Saturday’s 41-13 outcome. Additionally, Freeman’s group forced five takeaways, scored two times on interceptions and allowed just one third-down conversion over 14 attempts.
True Freshman of the Week: Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas
Worthy grabbed five receptions for 100 yards in Texas’ win over Texas Tech. Three of Worthy’s five catches went for touchdowns.
