With the seventh weekend of the 2020 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team, and freshman from Week 7:
College Football Week 7 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
Georgia’s standout secondary had no answers for Smith on Saturday night. The senior grabbed 11 receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-24 win by the Crimson Tide.
Defensive Player of the Week: Grant Morgan, LB, Arkansas
Morgan recorded 19 tackles (three for a loss), one sack, one interception and two pass breakups in Arkansas’ win over Ole Miss. Morgan’s interception in the fourth quarter was returned for a touchdown to give the Razorbacks a 33-21 lead with less than four minutes to go.
Team of the Week: Alabama
The Crimson Tide scored the biggest win of college football’s 2020 season by defeating Georgia 41-24 on Saturday night. Quarterback Mac Jones guided the offense to an average of 7.4 yards per snap, connecting with receivers Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith for several key completions. Running back Najee Harris also pounded the Bulldogs for 152 yards. After giving up 24 points in the first half, Alabama’s defense pitched a shutout over the final two quarters.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Kevin Johns, Memphis
Memphis scored 36 points in the second half to beat UCF 50-49 on Saturday. The Tigers finished with 703 total yards (7.4 yards per snap), converted six of 16 third-down opportunities and scored on five of the final six drives. Quarterback Brady White threw for 486 yards and six touchdowns, while the Memphis ground game recorded 217 yards over 45 attempts.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Barry Odom, Arkansas
The Razorbacks continued their defensive improvement under Odom with a strong showing against Ole Miss. Arkansas limited the Rebels – one of the SEC’s top offenses – to 4.9 yards a snap and 21 points. Additionally, the Razorbacks limited Ole Miss to just four third-down conversions on 16 tries and forced seven takeaways.
Freshman of the Week (Offense): Grayson McCall, QB, Coastal Carolina
McCall guided Coastal Carolina to a road win at Louisiana on Wednesday night. He completed 17 of 24 throws for 202 yards and two touchdowns and added 45 yards and a score on the ground.
Freshman of the Week (Defense): Hudson Clark, CB, Arkansas
Clark recorded five tackles and intercepted three passes in Arkansas’ win over Ole Miss.
