Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei officially entered college football's transfer portal on Monday. Uiagalelei's decision to transfer doesn't come as a surprise, as the torch was officially passed to freshman Cade Klubnik in the ACC Championship Game.
Uiagalelei ranked as a five-star prospect coming out of high school and took over the starting job after Trevor Lawrence left for the NFL after the 2020 season. However, Uiagalelei had an up-and-down debut as the starter in '21, and Clemson's offense struggled around him at receiver and along the offensive line. The California native rebounded in '22, throwing for 2,521 yards and 22 touchdowns and adding 545 yards and seven scores on the ground.
Where could Uiagalelei land as a transfer? Here are six teams to watch (in alphabetical order):
DJ Uiagalelei: 6 Potential Transfer Destinations for the Former Clemson QB
New coach Kenny Dillingham is expected to be aggressive in pursuing players from the portal to improve the roster for 2023. Could the first-year coach look at Uiagalelei as an option for his quarterback room?
With Anthony Richardson opting to enter the NFL draft, could coach Billy Napier pursue an option in the portal?
The Fighting Irish are reportedly in the market for a transfer addition at quarterback. Tyler Buchner missed most of '22 due to injury, and with Drew Pyne entering the portal, coach Marcus Freeman needs to add a potential starter to push for the job or at least provide depth.
If Bo Nix opts for the NFL, this could be a landing spot as coach Dan Lanning looks to bridge the gap to the younger quarterbacks on the roster.
The Beavers are looking for quarterback help after getting inconsistent play under center in 2022. And with Chance Nolan departing to the portal, there's a need for both depth and starting potential. Uiagalelei also could benefit from working with head coach Jonathan Smith, a former Oregon State QB.
UCLA and coach Chip Kelly make a ton of sense as a potential fit for Uiagalelei. The California native went to high school at St. John Bosco High School, which is less than 30 minutes away from Los Angeles. The Bruins also have a need at quarterback with Dorian Thompson-Robinson departing after the '22 season.
