Ypsilanti, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Eastern Michigan fired football coach Ron English on Friday in the midst of a 1-8 season.
English was 11-46 in four-plus seasons since being hired in December 2008.
Assistant coach Stan Parrish will lead the Eagles on an interim basis while the school looks for a new head coach.
Eagles athletic director Heather Lyke said she decided a change in leadership was necessary.
"We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes and we will continue to do everything we can to support their success in the classroom and on the field," EMU president Susan Martin said in a statement.
"This has been an extraordinarily challenging year for our football student- athletes and they have continued to represent Eastern with pride and professionalism. At this time of transition, it is important that Eastern Michigan fans and alumni everywhere continue to show their support for our student-athletes. Your involvement is part of the foundation from which we will create a stronger program in the future."
Last month, Eagles wide receiver Demarius Reed was found shot to death in the hallway of an apartment complex.
