Tom Herman will be back on the sidelines next season coaching college football.

The former Houston and University of Texas head coach was hired by Florida Atlantic this Thursday according to multiple reports and will look to undo some of the damage done to the program by former skipper Willie Taggert.

Taggert, fired after an Owls' loss in their regular season finale last week to Northern Kentucky, ended his tenure at Florida Atlantic with a 15-18 record.

Herman's return to coaching has generated a wide range of takes from the college football world. Here's a few of the most noteworthy reactions, including what Herman was up to before taking the Owl's job:

Herman, before taking the FAU head coaching position Thursday, reportedly served as an offensive assistant for the Chicago Bears last season according to PFF. When the Bears made the transition to head coach Matt Eberflus this year, however, Herman was not retained

Despite his short stint in the NFL, several collegiate programs likely showed interest in Herman based on his success coaching at Houston and Texas. Between his time at the two schools, Herman tallied a record of 54-22.

On top of his strong overall record, Herman seems to excel when the lights turn brightest. The Action Network's Brett McMurphy noted that Herman's Houston and Texas teams were a "perfect 5-0 in bowl games, including 2 New Year’s 6 bowls."

Because of Herman's track record of collegiate success, one college football writer even believes a recent Texas quarterback transfer could make his way down to Florida Atlantic.

"Add FAU to the list of potential landing spots for Hudson Card with Tom Herman getting the HC job. The plot thickens," On3Sports' J.D. Pickell tweeted Thursday.

Herman and the Florida Atlantic Owls will transition from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference next season. After opening their 2023 campaign against Monmouth and Ohio, the Owls will face a stiff test on the road at Clemson.
