Former Nebraska Cornhusker and eight-year NFL vet Will Compton dropped a bombshell Tuesday on Twitter.
Compton, who co-hosts the popular podcast Bussin' With The Boys, suggested that Matt Rhule could be the Cornhuskers' next head coach.
"I’m hearing Matt Rhule is currently in Nebraska and the connection is strong with the Huskers," Compton said on Twitter.
Rhule's NFL coaching tenure ended unceremoniously, but he'd bring much-needed experience at the college level for the 3-7 Cornhuskers.
Coaching to a cumulative 11-27 record over two seasons and one partial campaign, Rhule was fired by the Carolina Panthers in a year marred by inconsistency from the team's quarterbacks.
Rhule assuredly won't be judged by an ill-fated NFL venture, as so many college coaches have experienced prior. Following nearly 15 years in complementary coaching roles, Rhule coached the Temple Owls and Baylor Bears to an overall 47-43 record spanning seven seasons.
If Compton's rumors hold weight, Rhule would have a tall order in reshaping the fledgling Cornhuskers football program. The team never reached .500 under the stewardship of Scott Frost. Following Frost's departure, Nebraska has played to a 2-5 mark with Mickey Joseph as head coach.
