Georgia Football: Kirby Smart is the Fifth Best Coach in College Football

Georgia Football: Kirby Smart

Georgia Football: Kirby Smart

College football has its share of great coaches. One of the best coaches in the game is Georgia's Kirby Smart.

In Athlon Sports' Top 130 Coach Rankings, the Bulldogs' head coach is listed at No. 5. He appears just behind Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher (No. 4) and just ahead of TCU's Gary Patterson (No. 6).

Here's why: Smart has quickly elevated Georgia into contention for a spot in the CFB Playoff on an annual basis. After a successful run as Alabama’s defensive coordinator from 2008-15, Smart returned to his alma mater prior to the 2016 season. The Bulldogs finished 8-5 overall and just 4-4 in SEC play in Smart’s debut. However, this program took off in 2017 and came within a couple of plays of winning the national championship. Smart guided Georgia to an SEC title and a Rose Bowl win before falling in overtime to Alabama for the title that year. The Bulldogs had another strong 2018 season, as this team claimed the SEC East title and finished just outside the top four for the CFB Playoff. With Smart reeling in elite talent on the recruiting trail, combined with a loaded roster for 2019, Georgia should be in the mix to win it all this season.
