Florida head coach Jim McElwain named Will Grier the starter for the Gators when they host East Carolina Saturday in Gainesville. Grier, a former Parade Magazine Player of the Year, split time with true sophomore Treon Harris in last week's 61-13 win over New Mexico State. While Harris started the game, Grier saw significant action and went 15-of-17 for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown.
Grier played high school football at Davidson Day School in Davidson, N.C., and passed for 14,565 yards and 195 touchdown passes in his career. He currently holds the state record for career touchdown passes. In a 2012 high school playoff game against Harrells Christian Academy, Grier passed for 837 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Grier’s father, Chad, played quarterback at East Carolina in the late 1980s.
