The quarterback is easily the most important on-field position for any college football team. Signal-callers can truly make their teammates better and enhance their play on the field. While quarterback - especially proven ones - are valuable, this position is not easy to evaluate and the overall performance can depend on some of the help from the supporting cast. These pocket passers and dual-threats are some of the best in the nation and these clashes should make it an enjoyable season in the Mountain West. Here are the top 10 quarterback matchups involving Mountain West teams for 2016:
MWC's Best QB Matchups of 2016
1. Luke Falk (WSU) vs. Brett Rypien (BOISE) 9/10
Two of the finest quarterbacks out west battle in Boise for a huge non-conference game for both squads.
2. Kent Myers (UTST) vs. Brett Rypien (BOISE) 10/1
Athlon's projected top two signal-callers from the Mountain West won't disappoint in this one.
3. Tanner Mangum (BYU) vs. Brett Rypien (BOISE) 10/20
We list Mangum here, but BYU could also start Taysom Hill. Either way, this should be a good matchup of quarterbacks and high-scoring offenses on Oct. 20.
4. Kent Myers (UTST) vs. Max Browne (USC) 9/10
Myers will take on a former blue-chipper in Browne who has yet to start a game at the college level. Will Myers' experience give the Aggies the edge? Browne is the favorite to start at USC, but he will be pushed for time from redshirt freshman Sam Darnold.
5. Nick Stevens (CSU) vs. Mitch Leidner (MINN) 9/24
Stevens and Co. were pretty close to pulling off the upset last fall by losing in overtim. Expect the second-year starter for coach Mike Bobo to bounce back from throwing two interceptions against the Gophers last year.
6. Nick Stevens (CSU) vs. Brett Rypien (BOISE) 10/15
The Rams got absolutely pummeled last year versus the Broncos 41-10 and we're sure they have this one marked on their calendar.
7. Kent Myers (UTST) vs. Nick Stevens (CSU) 10/8
An important Mountain Division matchup will take place in Fort Collins as the top tier of quarterbacks in the MWC clash in early October.
8. Kenny Potter (SJSU) vs. Brett Rypien (BOISE) 11/5
Potter had the highest completion percentage in the MWC last season. With a few key playmakers coming back, he should lead the league again in that category.
9. Kenny Potter (SJSU) vs. Dane Evans (TULSA) 9/3
Some of the better Group of 5 signal-callers will square off in Oklahoma for the opening week of college football. There should be no shortage of points in this one.
10. Brett Rypien (BOISE) vs. Lamar Jordan (UNM) 10/8
The Lobos pulled off the upset in Boise last season with a 31-24 victory. Can they defend their home turf against the Broncos in Albuquerque this year?
