Notre Dame added another recruit to its 2016 class despite the dead period getting a verbal from rangy defensive end Adetokunbo Ogundeji on Thursday.

When Ogundeji made his announcement few were surprised Notre Dame’s name was called. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound, rising star had narrowed his list of offers down to Pitt, Rutgers, Cal, Toledo, and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish had received two unofficial visits from Ogundeji, on Jun. 18 and June 27, leading many to believe his commitment to Notre Dame was just a matter of time.

Other programs to offer the Walled Lake, Mich., talent included Oregon, Buffalo, and Miami (Ohio). Western Michigan almost landed a big one, receiving a verbal from the in-state prospect on Feb. 23. In the offseason more and more teams caught on to Ogundeji’s talents leading to a wider circle of opportunities and a parting of ways with the Broncos.

Ogundeji helped Walled Lake Central to a 9-4 record in 2014 and a run into the Michigan high school playoffs before falling to Clarkston 40-22.

Notre Dame now has 13 verbal commitments in its 2016 recruiting class. Ogundeji is the second defensive end commitment, joining Julian Okwara (Ardrey Kell HS, Charlotte, N.C.)
