Position changes at any level of football happen all the time. But rarely do you see a kicker try out a position other than punter. However, one Ohio State kicker feels he has what it takes to play on the defensive side of the football.
According to a report, former Ohio State kicker Jake Seibert is switching positions. Seibert, who converted one of his two field goal tries in 2020, will now play cornerback for the Buckeyes.
It's unclear if this is permanent or simply temporary. Regardless, Seibert is the newest defensive back for the Buckeyes; a stunning position change in the college football world.
"It's true: Jake Seibert, who has been a kicker for his first two years at Ohio State, was practicing at cornerback today," said Dan Hope.
We're not sure this has ever happened before, at least over the past few decades or so. It's pretty impressive.
It's unclear if this is a depth issue for Ohio State or Jake Seibert simply wants to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing defensive back. Whatever the case may be, it's a shocking position change.
The Buckeyes begin the 2022 season on Sept. 3 vs. the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
