Oklahoma State Cowboys 2017 Football Schedule and Analysis

A three-game stretch in October could make or break Oklahoma State’s dark horse dreams

With star quarterback Mason Rudolph and an abundance of offensive weapons back in 2017, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have dark horse hopes of winning the Big 12 and qualifying for the College Football Playoff. The schedule generally seems to break in their favor, as projected contenders Oklahoma and Kansas State play OSU at T. Boone Pickens Stadium.

An early road game against Pittsburgh is no walkover, though. Meanwhile, if an October run of Texas, West Virginia and OU goes south, the Cowboys could quickly find their season in peril.

2017 Oklahoma State Cowboys Schedule

Bye: Week 6

Wk Opp. Date Location
1.

Sept. 2

Stillwater, OK

The Golden Hurricane make the short trip west on the Cimarron Turnpike to take on the Cowboys in the season opener for both teams. OSU’s remade defense will get a stiff test from Tulsa’s high-powered attack.

2.

Sept. 9

Mobile, AL

The Cowboys go on the road in the second week for a date with the Jaguars. Has OSU athletic director Mike Holder ever explained why his team is playing this game away from T. Boone Pickens Stadium?

3.

Sept. 16

Pittsburgh, PA

Back-to-back road trips in September? Yeah, Holder could have some explaining to do.

4. Sept. 23 Stillwater, OK

Mike Gundy’s team embarrassed the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth last year. Ever known Gary Patterson to let that kind of thing slide?

5. Sept. 30 Lubbock, TX

Another rough one for the Cowboys’ unproven defense. Things tend to get weird in Lubbock.

7. Oct. 14 Stillwater, OK

The Bears have won three straight against OSU. The Pokes will likely end the streak this season as the Matt Rhule era begins at Baylor.

8. Oct. 21 Austin, TX

The back half of the year for OSU starts with a visit to the Longhorns’ house. The Cowboys could be catching UT at the right time - a week after the Red River Showdown.

9. Oct. 28 Morgantown, WV

On the other hand, playing at WVU in the second of back-to-back roadies looks like a tough break. The unproven Mountaineers will have time to gel and should be looking for a statement win as the season enters the home stretch.

10.

Nov. 4

Stillwater, OK

Gundy just can’t seem to get over the hump in the Bedlam game. No matter the outcome here, the Pokes and Sooners could meet again a month later in the new Big 12 title game.

11. Nov. 11 Ames, IA

Scary letdown spot for the Cowboys following their date with the Sooners. OSU had to rally from 17 points down deep in the second half to stave off the Cyclones’ upset bid last season.

12. Nov. 18 Stillwater, OK

Here’s another game that could go a long way towards determining the top two finishers in the Big 12. Look for a motivated bunch of Wildcats if it turns out that this is Bill Snyder’s swan song season.

13. Nov. 25 Stillwater, OK

OSU cruises to the season’s finish line. Of course, Texas probably thought that last season, too.
