A new era in Oregon football began tumultuously. Willie Taggart was introduced in December, the first Ducks head coaching hire without prior UO experience in 40 years. Taggart came on to replace Mark Helfrich, who had coached Oregon in the national championship game just 23 months earlier.
A wave of bad news flooded in during the weeks following Taggart's introduction, not the least of which was the loss of assistant coaches David Reaves (dismissed following a DUI); Jimmie Dougherty (left for UCLA); and strength coach Irele Oderinde, who was suspended for the most serious issue of Oregon's offseason. Three players were hospitalized after they contracted rhabdomyolysis during intense January workouts.
Oregon football seeks to collectively turn the page from a rocky start to the new era, setting sights on a more successful fall than the program endured a year ago. The Ducks finished just 4-8 overall and in last place in the Pac-12 North with a 2-7 record.
