It hasn't been a pretty couple of weeks for several teams who were thought to be College Football Playoff contenders this season. As we wade through this out-of-the-ordinary college football season and more teams and conferences get their seasons underway, it's only going to get more difficult when it comes to figuring out who the contenders and pretenders are.
So far, we've had plenty of outrageous outcomes this season. Will that continue this weekend?
Of course it will.
Here are the OUTRAGEOUS predictions for Week 5.
Outrageous College Football Predictions for Week 5 of the 2020 College Football Season
TCU upsets Texas
The Longhorns had their hands full last weekend against Texas Tech. That was a true Big 12 contest, with defense being optional. This week, Texas faces an angry TCU team coming off a tough loss to Iowa State. The Horned Frogs are going to be better coached and play better defense than Texas Tech. I'm not sure the Longhorns have another barn-burner in them in consecutive weeks.
Texas A&M upsets Alabama
There is as much talent on this Texas A&M team as there ever was on any Florida State team Jimbo Fisher coached — and that includes his 2013 national championship team. Alabama didn't look like world-beaters against Missouri, and that makes sense. The Crimson Tide lost a lot of top talent to graduation and the NFL draft. They'll likely need a couple more games to get to a point where they are firing on all cylinders. The problem is, this is game No. 2, and Texas A&M is ready to play at a high level right now.
Jacksonville State stuns Florida State
The Seminoles are in shambles, and this program is a shell of what it was even a decade ago. In most years throughout the program's history, a game against an FCS opponent would be a chance to rest up and get healthy — basically a bye week. That's not the case this time around. Jacksonville State is a winning program that won't be intimidated by any FBS program. The Gamecocks are led by a high-level talent at quarterback in Clemson transfer Zerrick Cooper. We've seen worse FCS teams beat better FBS teams recently. Things are about to get ugly for Mike Norvell in Tallahassee.
Iowa State knocks Oklahoma out of the Top 25
I believe we saw the Sooners get exposed by Kansas State's resiliency and physicality last week. It was as if Oklahoma thought their opponent would just fold once they jumped out to a big lead. That's not in Kansas State's blood, and it's not how Matt Campbell's Cyclones operate either. After recovering from an opening weekend upset loss, the Cyclones bounced back with a tough conference road win against TCU. They have renewed confidence and momentum, and more talent than Kansas State. You're about to see the Sooners eliminated from Big 12 contention in the first weekend of October.
*Remember, "outrageous" can be defined as "wildly exaggerated or improbable," and "very bold, unusual, and startling." These are "outrageous" predictions and should be treated as such.
