I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying this wild and crazy college football season. Teams have had to play high-stakes, conference games much earlier, and home-field advantage hasn't really been a factor. What we're getting is raw football, talent vs. talent, and coaching vs. coaching.
All of that has led to some early-season outrageousness. We've seen some top-10 teams get knocked around, and we've seen some Group of 5 programs take down some Power 5 teams that had high hopes.
Now, as we dive deeper into conference play, the roads are getting tough for some of the teams favored to be conference title contenders. Let's look at some OUTRAGEOUS* predictions for Week 6 of the 2020 college football season.
Outrageous College Football Predictions for Week 6
Texas beat Oklahoma by double digits
Both teams have stumbled. Oklahoma's struggles look like a trend based on inexperience — especially at the quarterback position. Texas' loss last weekend was more of a wake-up call. Look for the Longhorns to be focused, leaning on quarterback Sam Ehlinger, and put a beating on the Sooners the likes of which we rarely see in this rivalry.
Texas A&M upsets Florida
Speaking of wake-up calls, the Aggies got one — a humbling one — last weekend against Alabama. Luckily for them, they get to turn around one week later with a chance to proves themselves against another top-5 team. Florida is a better matchup for the style of football Texas A&M plays. Look for a shootout between Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond and Gator signal-caller Kyle Trask, ending in a close Aggie win.
Mac Jones emerges as the Heisman front-runner
There weren't many expectations for Jones coming into the season. We figured the talent around him would be good enough for him to simply be a game manager. He's been much more than that through two games. Now he has a chance against an inferior Ole Miss team to put up some big numbers on a national stage in primetime. Look for Jones to seize the moment and come out of the weekend as the lead horse in the Heisman race.
Arkansas upset Auburn
The Razorbacks shocked everyone by somewhat containing Mike Leach's Air Raid offense last weekend en route to an upset win. Meanwhile, Auburn comes into the game licking their wounds after a loss to Georgia that wasn't even as close as the 27-6 scores would indicate. Look for Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman and his staff to have a plan to stifle another great quarterback, keep the game close, and sneak away with a win.
*Remember, "outrageous" can be defined as "wildly exaggerated or improbable," and "very bold, unusual, and startling." These are "outrageous" predictions and should be treated as such.
