Is it possible to top last week's outrageous results?
We saw four top-10 teams lose last week, drastically flipping the script on where the 2018 college football season was headed. Heading into Week 8, we are looking at another slate of games with the potential to yield another handful of outrageous outcomes.
Can this week's result top last week's in terms of outrageousness? There are five ways I believe it can — with three of them coming in the Big Ten.
Here are the OUTRAGEOUS* college football predictions for Week 8 of the 2018 season.
Outrageous College Football Predictions for Week 8
Michigan State takes down Michigan by double digits
The Spartans are flying high after a win over Penn State last week. Their renewed confidence comes just in time to take on their in-state rival, who has its eyes on the College Football Playoff. Look for the same stingy defense combined with a clock-killing ground game from Michigan State to frustrate Jim Harbaugh's squad all day. Another late touchdown pass from Brian Lewerke will ultimately seal the deal.
Maryland takes Iowa to overtime
The Hawkeyes look impressive so far this season. Almost every year, we watch the Hawkeyes win a game in Iowa City that we never saw coming. That said, we also frequently see them struggle with inferior opponents at home. This season, the Maryland game has that look. Keep an eye on the speed of the Terrapin offense to keep the Iowa defense on its heels the entire game. That'll put extra pressure on Nate Stanley and the Hawkeye offense to keep moving the ball in order to give their defense some rest. In the end, home-field advantage saves the Hawkeyes, but not before a serious scare.
Indiana upsets Penn State
The Hoosiers return home to finish off a brutal three-game stretch of Ohio State, Iowa and Penn State. After taking one on the chin against the Hawkeyes last week, look for them to button things up on defense and be extra-aggressive against a Penn State squad that was held to just 17 points a week ago. As always, the Hoosiers will be just as aggressive on offense, keeping their pedal on the gas in a game that Penn State has little motivation to win.
Jalen Hurts replaces Tagovailoa to save Alabama's perfect season
Tennessee shocked a lot of people in the college football world with a win over Auburn last week. The Volunteers were able to pull off the upset by putting pressure on the quarterback and coming away with a couple of interceptions. Look for a similar effort this week against the best team in the country, as the Vols log the first interception of Tagovailoa in 2018 and take a lead into halftime. Nick Saban will then turn to Hurts for a spark in order to get his team out of Knoxville with a win.
NC State stuns Clemson
The Tigers have flirted with disater a couple of time this season. The offense has looked inconsistent regardless of who has been under center. NC State comes to town as a bit of an unproven commodity. The Wolfpack have yet to allow more than 23 points in a game — albeit against a weak schedule — and their quarterback is having another solid season. Look for Ryan Finley and the NC State offense to open it up and turn this game into a shootout en route to another top-five upset that rocks the road to the College Football Playoff.
*Remember, "outrageous" can be defined as “wildly exaggerated or improbable,” and “very bold, unusual, and startling.” These are "outrageous" predictions and should be treated as such.
