You won't get much more outrageous than the Illinois win over Wisconsin last weekend, but college football is sure going to try every week.
As the 2019 season barrels into late October, we continued to be bombarded by some interesting matchups and scenarios with the potential to yield some pretty OUTRAGEOUS* outcomes. This is the part of the season where contenders establish themselves, pretenders are exposed, and the outrageous is just around the corner — waiting to throw another wrench in the process.
Outrageous College Football Predictions for Week 9
Illinois gets to .500
Lovie Smith's team finally tasted a big win last weekend. They'll be hungry for more on a road trip to Purdue against a team they match up well with. Illini quarterback Brandon Peters is emerging as one of the better stories in college football. Look for him to have another big game under center and get Illinois two wins away from bowl eligibility.
Washington State upsets Oregon
The Cougars had a bit of a "get-right" game last weekend against Colorado, and they looked solid on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, Oregon was going through an emotionally and physically exhausting game against Washington. It took everything the Ducks had to beat the Huskies, and I'm not sure they have enough in the tank to turn around a week later and handle Mike Leach's air raid offense.
Ohio State holds Jonathan Taylor under 50 rushing yards
Taylor has been nothing short of unstoppable this season. He also hasn't faced a defense in the same galaxy as what the Buckeyes are in 2019. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day — like the rest of the country — knows that Taylor makes Wisconsin's offense go. Look for the Buckeyes to exploit their own talent by stacking the box and allowing their talented defensive backs to play man against Wisconsin's receiver all day, hold Taylor to a season-low on the ground.
Auburn beat LSU by double digits
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is getting plenty of Heisman love after a couple of solid performances in some big wins. Now he'll need to prove himself against one of the best defensive fronts in the nation. This game is essentially a de-facto playoff game in the SEC West. All of the pressure is on the home Tigers, and Auburn will be fired up to put themselves back into the College Football Playoff conversation. Look for Gus Malzahn's crew to log the upset.
Notre Dame beats Michigan by three scores
Michigan gave everything they had in Happy Valley last weekend and came up just short. Now they'll turn around and face a Notre Dame team every bit as talented as the Nittany Lions. The Irish are motivated to stay in the College Football Playoff hunt, while the Wolverines have been all but eliminated from Big Ten and national title contention. Additionally, Notre Dame is coming off of a bye week and have been preparing for the Wolverines for two weeks. This one could get ugly in a hurry.
*Remember, "outrageous" can be defined as “wildly exaggerated or improbable,” and “very bold, unusual, and startling.” These are "outrageous" predictions and should be treated as such.
