Athlon hands out the awards from the Week 5 action in the SEC
With the fifth weekend of the 2018 season in the books for the SEC, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the SEC's offensive, defensive, coordinator, team and freshman from Week 5.
SEC Week 5 College Football Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
Burrow connected on 18 of 25 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns and led the Tigers with 96 rushing yards and a score in LSU’s 45-16 win over Ole Miss.
Defensive Player of the Week: Josh Allen, DE/LB, Kentucky
Allen recorded eight tackles (four for a loss), one forced fumble and three sacks in Kentucky’s win over South Carolina.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Steve Ensminger, LSU
LSU’s offense posted 45 points and 573 yards (7.6 a play) in Saturday night’s 45-16 victory over Ole Miss. The Tigers had a balanced attack, generating 292 through the air and 281 on the ground. LSU only had one three-and-out and recorded 33 first downs on 75 snaps.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Todd Grantham, Florida
Grantham’s defense limited Mississippi State to just six points and 202 total yards (3.5 a play) in Saturday’s 13-6 win in Starkville. This unit also recorded six sacks, eight tackles for a loss and did not allow a play longer than 17 yards.
Team of the Week: Florida
Dan Mullen’s return to Starkville was a successful one. Florida leaned on its defense to earn a 13-6 victory over Mississippi State, while its offense managed 357 total yards (5.4 per play). The Gators had 239 yards through the air and did not have a three-and-out.
Freshman of the Week (Offense): Jaylen Waddle, Alabama
Waddle caught three passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns and added a 63-yard punt return for a score in Alabama’s victory over Louisiana.
Freshman of the Week (Defense): Dimitri Moore, LB, Vanderbilt
Moore collected six tackles and a pass breakup in Vanderbilt’s win over Tennessee State.
