Rece Davis Proposes Massive Field For Future College Football Playoffs

The College Football Playoff started with four teams and will expand to 12 teams starting this coming season. Now, before even testing out the 12 team field, there's talks of moving it to 14 teams

On a recent episode of the College GameDay podcast, Rece Davis floated the idea of just skipping over 14 and going directly to 16 teams.

The proposed larger field will allow for more games to be played on-campus.

“Since we have expanded beyond the very small playoff, I would prefer just going ahead and going to 16, playing the first two rounds on campus, and eliminating conference championship games,” Davis said. “Each of these mega conferences would play a 10-game schedule in-conference and then not required but strongly encouraged to play another power team from the outside. Whether that’s crossover SEC/Big Ten or ACC, Big 12, whatever.”

While Davis did not receive any pushback on this idea yet, Greg McElroy took issue with the CFP being so eager to jump to 14 teams before even trying out the 12 team field.

"Do we have to discuss expanding right now?" asked McElroy. "Expanding to 14 before we've had 12 just seems backwards."
