There Was a Heated Postgame Handshake After Friday Night College Football Game
In a Friday night showdown between in-state rivals, the University of South Florida Bulls went on a major second-half run to take down the Florida Atlantic Owls by a score of 44-21.
The Owls took a 21-14 lead with 10:25 remaining in the third quarter but ended up allowing the Bulls to score 30 unanswered points. On top of the major meltdown during the game, FAU head coach Tom Herman had a meltdown of his own after the game while shaking the hand of USF head coach Alex Golesh.
With the two coaches walking at one another, Golesh can be seen firmly grabbing Herman's hand and brushing him out of the way with his shoulder before walking away.
This then led to Herman chasing after him to give him a piece of his mind while Golesh was clearly making it a point to ignore him. Golesh never ended up stopping, and Herman eventually stopped his pursuit and was pulled away by who appears to be his wife Michelle Herman.
While it's unclear if Herman was upset about the handshake itself or the Bulls' late-game antics that saw them go for two despite leading by 23 points, Action Network's Brett McMurphy did provide some eye-opening context on X. McMurphy reminded college football fans that in last year's meeting, Herman opted to kick an onside kick despite leading 42.
"Last year, FAU, up 56-14 on USF in the 4th, kicks an onside kick," McMuprhy wrote, referencing the meeting from last season. "Tonight, USF, after a TD makes it 44-21 in the 4th, goes for 2-point conversion..."
The loss drops Herman's Owls to 2-6 on the year as they were unable to pull off the win despite the Bulls having 13 penalties for 100 yards, and also despite winning the time of possession battle by nearly eight minutes.
The former Texas Longhorns coach now has a 6-14 record across his two seasons in Boca Raton.
The USF rushing attack accumulated over 300 yards rushing on 43 carries, while backup quarterback Bryce Archie had his best performance of the year, throwing for 206 yards while completing a season-high 59.4% of his passes and notching two touchdowns.
The Owls will look to keep their bowl game hopes alive next Thursday when they take on the East Carolina Pirates (4-4).
As for Golesh and the Bulls (4-4), they will be hosting the Navy Midshipmen (6-1) on Saturday.
