A wild Week 10 in college football led to some drastic changes in the second College Football Playoff top 25 of the year.
Nine of the top 10 teams changed places from last week. One of those has caught the eye of a prominent college football reporter as not belonging with the rest.
Stewart Mandel of the Athletic called No. 8 USC "the most overrated" team in the updated rankings.
Mandel pointed out that the Trojans haven't beaten another team ranked in the top 25 and called their defense "horrific."
"Honestly the team that is most overrated at this point is USC at No. 8," Mandel tweeted. "No wins over current Top 25. Horrific defense."
USC is 8-1 on the season, but in the only game it has played against an opponent currently ranked in the top 25 they lost at Utah 43-42. It ranks 95th in the nation in total defense and 60th in scoring defense.
The good news for the Trojans is that they will have plenty of opportunities to pad their resume down the stretch.
USC is set to close the regular season with consecutive matchups against No. 12 UCLA and No. 20 Notre Dame. The Trojans could also face No. 6 Oregon in the Pac-12 title game.
If USC can survive that gauntlet without a loss, it might be able to play itself into the four-team College Football Playoff field in Lincoln Riley's first season. But clearly at least one analyst doesn't think that's likely.
