Week 9 College Football Picks Against the Spread

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Boy was I wrong about Texas A&M and Utah. Thought Vegas was off on those lines last weekend and, once again, the Wise Guys prove to be the best analysts in the game. (Amazing how that works.)

However, I've gone to the Houston, Bowling Green and Washington State wells of late and it's paid off multiple times now.

Last Week: 4-4

Year-to-date: 29-22

Tennessee (-9) at Kentucky

The Vols have one of the most misleading records in football. They have been good on both sides of the ball, especially rushing offense (209.1 ypg). Kentucky just got destroyed by Mississippi State and hasn’t been able to stop anyone on the ground (78th in rush defense). As long as UT sticks to its game plan, the Vols should win easily. Prediction: Tennessee -9

Western Kentucky (-24) at Old Dominion

The Monarchs just aren’t any good on defense. They allowed 390 yards passing to FIU last weekend and 309 yards rushing to Charlotte the week before. The Hilltoppers are one of the best offensive teams in the nation. Lay the points against a team that is 0-7 ATS this year. Prediction: Western Kentucky -24

Oklahoma State (-3.5) at Texas Tech

This is a hard one to peg emotionally for the Pokes after the tragedy last weekend. This is an odd line and I’m going purely off a hunch. Texas Tech plays very well at home and is capable of hanging with anyone on offense. Prediction: Texas Tech +3.5

Notre Dame (-10.5) at Temple

Despite a rash of injuries, the Irish’s offense is destroying opponents for 7.3 yards per play. NFL talents C.J. Prosise and Will Fuller won’t be stopped by the Fighting Matt Rhules. The Owls got off to slow starts in unimpressive wins against both UCF and ECU. The hype around this game and the off weekend will have Notre Dame focused — which is already 6-1 this year ATS. Prediction: Notre Dame -10.5

Vanderbilt (+13) at Houston

The Dores' defense has played very well this year and consistently kept teams under their averages. Houston is also playing a young O-Line against a very good Vandy defense. This should be a low-scoring game and Houston will win. But it will be close. Prediction: Vanderbilt +13

Clemson (-10.5) at NC State

This is dangerous with Florida State looming next weekend but I’m doing it anyway. Clemson is surging right now with eyes on an ACC and national title run. NC State is 5-2 but those wins have come against Troy, Eastern Kentucky, Old Dominion, South Alabama and Wake Forest. This is a different Clemson team. Prediction: Clemson -10.5

Stanford (-10.5) at Washington State

Strange things happen in Pullman, especially on Halloween. However, this line may be skewed due to how the Cougars have played the last few weeks. Look for Stanford’s power-rushing offense to abuse the Wazzu defensive front — one that allowed more than 7.0 yards per play against both Oregon and Arizona. Prediction: Stanford -10.5
