Ex-Alabama and Notre Dame QB Tyler Buchner To Return To Football As Walk-On WR After Lacrosse Championship

As a recruit, Tyler Buchner was a highly-touted four-star out of La Jolla, California who picked Notre Dame over other major offers like Alabama, Oregon, and Georgia.

His time with Notre Dame was derailed after he was initially the starter in 2022, but ended up missing a chunk of time with a shoulder injury. Prior to the 2023 season, he opted to leave the program as the Irish turned to the transfer portal, and landed in Tuscaloosa where he reunited with former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

He ended up playing in just two games for the Tide, completing 8-of-19 passes (42%) and also rushing for 20 yards. He then left Alabama in December, again opting to transfer, but not for football this time around. Buchner decided to pursue lacrosse, which was another sport he dominated at the high school level. He ended up returning to Notre Dame, and notching an assist in 10 games as a reserve midfielder for Notre Dame. On top of that, Notre Dame recently won their second straight national championship in Lacrosse.

On Friday, Buchner announced that he plans to make another return, this time to the gridiron.

According to a report by ESPN, Buchner will re-join the Notre Dame football program, this time as a walk-on wide receiver.

"Being able to play the game I have loved since I can remember and playing for Notre Dame had been my dream," Buchner wrote in a letter to Notre Dame fans. "I risked it all and believed I had lost it all, as I did not think even returning to football at Notre Dame would be in the cards."

Buchner is also expected to play Lacrosse next year as well.
