ESPN FPI Reveals Alabama’s Chances of Making College Football Playoff

The conference title games gave fans plenty of exciting finishes. Georgia outlasted Texas in overtime.

Oregon topped Penn State in a close Big Ten title game, and Clemson stunned SMU on a last-second field goal.

As a result, the last College Football Playoff spot will likely come down to Alabama or SMU.

The Mustangs losing in the ACC title game gave Alabama an even better chance than before.

However, the Crimson Tide have three losses, and the three-loss SEC debate has been a popular one all week long.

Early on Sunday morning, ESPN updated its Football Power Index (FPI) rankings, and it had Alabama at a 72.2% chance of making the College Football Playoff.

On November 24, Alabama had a 37.4% chance of making the CFP, so things have changed drastically in just a couple of weeks.

Alabama was 8-2, but an ugly 24-3 loss to Oklahoma in Week 13 sent them down quite a bit and gave them a tough climb.

However, even though SMU played in its conference title game while Alabama sat at home, the Crimson Tide's chances have now grown.

The latest ESPN FPI has SMU at just a 28% chance to make the Playoff, so in theory, Alabama will be the final team to make the field.

The official bracket will be revealed on Sunday afternoon.
