5-Star QB, Son of NFL Legend Receives First SEC Scholarship Offer
Gunner Rivers is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the class of 2027, and the St. Michael Catholic product can add an SEC scholarship to his resume.
The son of longtime NFL quarterback Philip Rivers, Gunner Rivers is a five-star recruit, rated as the No. 4 quarterback and the No. 33 player in his class, per 247Sports composite.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound passer just completed his sophomore season for St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama. Philip Rivers has served there as head coach since 2021 after a 17-year career in the NFL.
Rivers was the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL draft out of NC State in 2004. He went on to have a stellar career as a San Diego/Los Angeles Charger, featuring eight Pro Bowl selections. Rivers sits sixth all-time in career passing yards (63,440) and touchdowns (421).
Gunner Rivers appears to have been passed down his father's talents, as he has already received his first SEC scholarship offer from Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers, according to WKRG.
Rivers added the Auburn offer on Tuesday after receiving a visit from Tigers quarterback coach Kent Austin. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was also among other college coaches to visit the highly-rated prospect.
Rivers has started the last two seasons for his father at St. Michael Catholic, throwing for over 7,000 passing yards with 70 total touchdowns to 10 interceptions.
Auburn is the second program to extend an offer to Rivers following NC State, led by head coach Dave Doeren. The Wolfpack offered Rivers last May.
There is plenty of time remaining in Rivers' recruitment, with two more years of high school football ahead of him, though it's clear that the Tigers have made him a priority by offering him a scholarship this early.
