Deion Sanders Sends Message To Marcus Freeman After Notre Dame-Penn State Game
In his third full season as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach, Marcus Freeman has led his team to the College Football National Championship after defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions 27-24 in the Orange Bowl.
The game ended after Penn State quarterback Drew Allar threw an interception with under a minute to play. This set up a game-winning field goal by Notre Dame kicker Mitch Jeter with just seven seconds remaining.
Freeman now becomes the first Black coach and the first coach of Asian descent to take his team to the national championship. Deion Sanders, the coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, was impressed with this latest feat and sent Freeman a message over social media.
"Congratulations my Brother," Sanders wrote on X.
During the 2023 season, Freeman had high praise for Sanders, who was in his first year with the Buffaloes.
“I have the utmost respect for him and really the excitement he’s bringing to college football," Freeman said of Sanders in September 2023. "You know, what I really love about what Coach Deion Sanders is doing is that he’s showing that you don’t have to be a certain way to lead. And that’s what I want our players to understand, my own children understand, is you can be who you are and be a leader."
Now, after a strong second season, Sanders will be looking to take Colorado where Freeman has taken Notre Dame. However, it may become a more difficult challenge with stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter departing for the NFL draft.
After falling to Northern Illinois in Week 2, Freeman and the Fighting Irish have now where their last 13 games. Their path to the national championship consisted of a win over the Indiana Hoosiers in the first round, a win over the Georgia Bulldogs in the quarterfinals from the Sugar Bowl and now Penn State.
Notre Dame will face the winner of the second semifinal game between Georgia and Ohio State in the championship.
