Dick Vitale Fired up by Cooper Flagg's Monster Game vs. No. 2 Auburn
The Duke Blue Devils took care of business on Wednesday with a big win over No. 2 Auburn on the same night that Hunter Dickinson and No. 1 Kansas lost to Creighton.
The surprising turn of events means there could be a changing of the guard at the top of the college hoops rankings by the time the next poll comes out.
Freshman sensation Cooper Flagg dropped 22 points against the Tigers at Cameron Indoor Stadium, quieting the doubters and giving No. 9 Duke its biggest win on the young season. Fellow freshman Kon Knueppel added six points two rebounds and three assists.
The Blue Devils lost to the top-ranked Jayhawks on Nov. 26, but Flagg made sure that wasn't going to happen on Wednesday as he battled through a limp and potential injury to lead Duke to an 84-78 win.
Flagg put up a LeBron James-caliber stat line as he led Duke in three categories on the stat sheet. Flagg had 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, prompting legendary college hoops announcer Dick Vitale to share a strong take on the freshman superstar.
"The BEST PLAYER in @DukeMBB Major W vs. a super @AuburnMBB was a 17-year-old @Cooper_Flagg as he does it ALL-SCORES - PASSES- REBOUNDS -DEFENDS a winner - TOTAL TEAM PLAYER - in fact I think he is to UNSELFISH- should [help] Made my three tennis grandkids at Duke very happy tonight," the 85-year-old "Dickie V" wrote on X.
