HBCU Basketball Stars Make Noise At G League Elite Camp
Joe Bryant Jr. and Shaun Doss Jr. were the HBCU representatives at the 2023 NBA G League Elite Camp. Unfortunately, neither player earned an invite to the NBA Combine.
But there are some positives for Bryant, the two-time MEAC Player of the Year, and Doss, the First-Team All-SWAC selection. Both players participated in the exhibition games, testing, and drills.
On the court, Bryant and Doss performed much better in the second game than in the first. Bryant had as many points (2) as he did turnovers and fouls in his first game, but in the second game, he came alive, scoring 8 points with two rebounds and an assist in 16 minutes.
The same goes for Doss, who only saw 11 minutes of action in his first game and recorded a series of 1's on his stat line: one rebound, one assist, one foul, and one turnover for a plus-minus of -8. The second game? He scored 5 points, including a 3-pointer, two steals, and a block. And his plus-minus of +17 was the highest of any player in the game.

Regarding the testing, Doss's wingspan is one thing that stuck out. Below are the largest wingspans of G League Elite campers under 6'4" without shoes.
Name | School/Program | Height W/o Shoes | Wingspan |
---|---|---|---|
Taevion Kinsey | Marshall | 6'3.75" | 6'10.5" |
Shaun Doss Jr. | Arkansas-Pine Bluff | 6'3.5" | 6'10" |
Jazian Gortman | Overtime Elite | 6'1" | 6'10" |
As an undersized shooting guard, Doss' wingspan is a great equalizer. He was top-10 in steals in the SWAC last season at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and displayed that prowess at camp.
Bryant is also undersized at 6'0.25" without shoes, but he makes up for it with his strength (209 pounds) and lateral quickness. Bryant had the fourth-fastest shuttle time to the left and the fastest to the right of all the players. That'll work in his favor as someone who can hold his own defensively.
With the NBA Summer League a couple of months away, it's fair to expect Doss and Bryant to compete in Las Vegas after putting themselves on the map in Chicago.
