College Football Playoff Contender Receives Devastating Recruiting News On Wednesday
Things aren't looking great for Miami's playoff chances, and they also got some bad recruiting news Wednesday. As they wait with bated breath to see if they can still sneak into the playoffs, they've learned that class of 2025 safety Timothy Merritt has decided to flip his commitment from Miami.
According to On3 Recruits, Merritt is now committing to Tennessee. He had been committed to Miami since June.
“It was destined for a while now, I just had to embrace it,” Merritt told On3 Recruits.
It hasn't been a great week for head coach Mario Cristobal and his Miami program.
It appears likely that the Hurricanes will be left out of the College Football Playoff, and now they lose out on Merritt. This comes just hours after news dropped that 4-star cornerback Ben Hanks Jr. signed with the Florida Gators despite recent attempts from Miami to flip him.
That said, the Hurricane did outperform expectations this season. They were ranked 19th in the country by the AP heading into the year but are currently 14th. But the team will be losing quarterback Cam Ward to the NFL and are missing out on top recruits, so there could be some big questions surrounding the program in 2025.
