Massive Upset for Powerhouse Team Shakes Up College Football Playoff Bracket
The College Football Playoff bracket is getting a major shakeup after a wild day of football on Saturday, with one team dropping to the wrong side of the bubble after blowing a massive lead.
The Miami Hurricanes went into their showdown with Syracuse as 12.5-point favorites and jumped out to a 21-point lead early in the second quarter, but saw the Orange come charging back. Syracuse scored three unanswered touchdowns to tie the game, then outscored the Hurricanes 21-17 the rest of the way to come out with a 42-38 victory.
The Hurricanes had an opportunity to tie the game late, trailing by a touchdown deep in Syracuse territory, but opted to take a 27-yard field goal. They never saw the ball again, with Syracuse running the final 3:42 off the clock in their final drive.
The loss could have major playoff implications for Miami. The Allstate Playoff Predictor had the Hurricanes dropping to a 40% chance of making the College Football Playoff with a loss.
Saturday's upset to Syracuse marked the second loss in the last three games for Miami, who also lost to Georgia Tech on Nov. 9. The loss not only hurt Miami's playoff hopes, but also increased pressure on head coach Mario Cristobal
"Miami getting to November undefeated only to lose twice as a double-digit favorite and be eliminated from playoff contention is the most Mario Cristobal result possible," wrote Fox Sports radio commentator Aaron Torres in a post on X.
"Mario Cristobal entered November 2019, 2021 and 2024 all with the same scenario - win out, and you're in the playoff. He lost a combined five times, and will (almost certainly) make it none of those three seasons."
