Michigan Has Found Its New Offensive Coordinator

ANN ARBOR — The Michigan Wolverines appear to have found their next offensive coordinator. Multiple sources confirmed Tuesday night that North Carolina's Chip Lindsey, who spent the last two seasons orchestrating the Tar Heels' offense, is expected to take the reins of Michigan's attack.

The timing is crucial as Michigan prepares for both its ReliaQuest Bowl showdown with Alabama and the challenge of developing incoming five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation's No. 1 overall recruit who signed with the Wolverines last Wednesday.

Lindsey brings an impressive quarterback development resume to Ann Arbor. At North Carolina, he mentored Drake Maye into becoming the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His offense ranked 37th nationally (423.4 yards per game) and 35th in scoring (32.3 points) - stark improvements over Michigan's struggles this season (128th in total offense, 112th in scoring).

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore speaks at the podium about Wolverines players.

The hire comes just days after Moore dismissed Kirk Campbell following one season as offensive coordinator. Moore emphasized finding someone who could build a balanced attack while matching his passion for the program:

"We want to make sure we found the right fit, the right person that not only scheme-wise, football-wise, development-wise, but also had a love for this place."

Lindsey's 26-year coaching journey includes stops as offensive coordinator at Southern Miss (2014-2015), Arizona State (2016), and Auburn (2017-2018), before serving as head coach at Troy (2019-2021). He then coordinated offenses at UCF (2022) and North Carolina (2023-2024).

The coaching change coincides with Michigan's quarterback carousel. Moore confirmed the team will pursue a veteran signal-caller through the transfer portal while maintaining transparency with current quarterback Davis Warren, who started eight games this season. In a recent press conference, Moore expanded on the Wolverine's portal priorities:

"Experience, a guy that's going to be a great leader, great teammate, obviously have the ability to play and yeah, got to be a great fit."

Meanwhile, the Wolverines' quarterback room continues to expand. In a major defeat for the Buckeyes, Michigan snatched Chase Herbstreit (son of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit) away form Ohio, commiting to Michigan's 2025 class on Sunday. Herbstreit provides another QB option, joining five-star recruit Underwood. The St. Xavier (Cincinnati) product tossed 26 touchdowns in his final season.

For the immediate future, tight ends coach Steve Casula will handle play-calling duties against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl as Michigan seeks to maintain momentum during this transition period.
