Bill Belichick Breaks Silence on North Carolina Speculation
After a surprise report emerged this past week that North Carolina had interviewed legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick for its head-coaching vacancy, things appeared to have heated up.
While other names, such as Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, came and went, Belichick has consistently been the name that stuck.
On Monday, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach went on ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show" to address the noise connecting him with the program that his father, Steve, coached at from 1953-55. While McAfee may have been hoping to get Belichick to divulge some key details that have yet to be heard about him being connected to North Carolina, in true Belichick fashion, the former New England Patriots coach kept his answers quite vague.
However, he confirmed that he spoke with the program's chancellor.
"I've talked to Chancellor (Lee) Roberts and we've had a couple of good conversations," Belichick said. "We'll see how it goes."
Belichick was not as willing to discuss the length of his conversation with North Carolina's Lee Roberts. McAfee questioned the former head coach about the length of his conversation with Roberts after learning from ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter that the two spoke for five hours on Sunday.
"Yeah, let's just leave it at that Pat (McAfee)," Belichick said. "I don't want to give up too much information. I'll lose my press conference...I want to get my press conference aura back."
While Belichick spent a lot of time around a college football program growing up, thanks to his father's role with the Navy Midshipman, he has never coached at the college level. He is also 15 wins away from becoming the winningest coach in NFL history, which is why some are surprised by his interest in coaching at the college level.
However, a recent report by Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, may have provided som clarity as to why Belichick is eyeing a role in the college ranks. Florio revealed that zero NFL teams have been in contact with Belichick regarding an opening, which is a development that left the 72-year-old “very surprised.”
While the door isn't shut on an opportunity in the NFL, Belichick could end up on the sidelines sooner if he takes a college job.
