Herbstreit Shares Strong Reaction to Bill Belichick, Rich Rodriguez Hires
College football is in the calm before the storm, as the first ever 12-team playoff field has been assembled and will kickoff in a matter of days.
But Wednesday, Dec. 11, surprisingly turned up a massive day across the sport, as two major head coaching hires went down -- one in the ACC and one in the Big 12.
The North Carolina Tar Heels hired former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to run that program, while the West Virginia Mountaineers reunited with Rich Rodriuguez, who left that program in 2007 after several years of substantial success and headed for the Big Ten Conference and its Michigan Wolverines.
ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit took to social media Wednesday with a strong reaction upon hearing both pieces of news.
"Incredible! I get on my flight to SF and Bill Belichick is done deal with [North Carolina] and now [Pete Thamel] saying Rich Rod to [West Virginia] COULD be happening as well?!? This is a GREAT day!" Herbstreit posted to X. "Congrats to both fan bases (if these deals are pulled off) and to CFB in general. Wow!"
Belichick is probably the more shocking news, although his connection to the Tar Heels had been a topic of public discussion and debate for several days before the six-time Super Bowl winner reached an agreement with UNC.
Rodriguez, meanwhile, hasn't been the head coach for a Power Conference program since parting ways with Arizona after the 2017 campaign. He spent the past two years as the head coach of Jacksonville State, going 9-4 in each season.
