Todd McShay Shares Bleak Outlook For Ryan Day at Ohio State After Michigan Loss

The stars were aligning for Ryan Day and the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes to end their losing streak against the Michigan Wolverines this past weekend.

Ohio State was viewed as having one of the best rosters in college football, while Michigan had been limping to bowl eligibility. However, in the battle of David and Goliath, it was David (Michigan) who walked out of Ohio Stadium with an ugly 13-10 win in what could only appropriately be described as a rock fight.

As expected, fans called for Ohio State head coach Ryan Day to be fired as his record in "The Game" dropped to 1-4 following the loss, and the team got into a brawl after Michigan planted their flag at mid-field.

However, the Ringer's NFL draft and college football insider, Todd McShay, also voiced on "The McShay Show" that he thinks Day's time should come to a close as the head coach.

"Ryan Day is out as the Ohio State head coach after this season," McShay said. "You just put 10 (points) on Michigan as the offensive coach and now you got a riot on your own field with your own players. But you know what was terrible in this whole thing? And it's just Ryan Day; part of it you can is having just the worst luck in the world.

"That Ryan Day when the camera comes over to him," McShay said. "You can read his lips, and he says to one assistant walking by, 'What happened?' And I get it. Like his world's like collapsing. But you're still the captain of this ship, and when you see all your players racing over to the middle of the field, you better get involved. Right? That's leadership."

McShay later explained that he doesn't view a world where Day can return as the head coach but did acknowledge just how difficult it will be to replace Urban Meyer's protege, who has a 66-10 record since taking over as the official head coach in 2019.

"You get to a point in a crossroads, if you will," McShay said. "Where I don't know how it would be productive for this program to move forward with him as the head coach, given the circumstances. Not because he can't do the job. And everyone's going to say,  'Good luck finding someone better.' I get it, and I agree. Good luck finding someone better than Ryan Day."

It's a challenging position for Ohio State, considering Day has led them to the playoffs in three of his first five seasons. Despite the chaos after Saturday, they still have a 96.3% chance of making the playoff this season, according to ESPN's FPI

A national championship can save Day's job, but anything short of that could be too little too late.
