Report Confirms Texas QB Quinn Ewers' Plans Amid Transfer Portal Speculation
As Quinn Ewers prepares for Texas' College Football Playoff battle against Clemson next weekend, we may have some clarity on his plans for next year.
Ewers is planning on declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft following the conclusion of the Longhorns' season, per Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods. Richardson also reported that backup QB Arch Manning has no plans to transfer and would slide right into the starting role next season.
While this has been the projected plan of succession for the Texas QB's since Manning's arrival in 2023, questions started to emerge about Ewers' future this fall. He entered this year with tons of hype as a preseason Heisman Trophy contender with first-round draft buzz, and was one of the cover athletes for EA Sports College Football 25. And on paper, he delivered, earning Second Team All-SEC honors with 2,665 yards and 25 touchdowns while leading UT to the SEC Championship Game.
However, it wasn't all roses for the veteran QB. He missed two games early in the season with an abdominal injury, prompting Manning into action for his first career college start. He returned for their annual rivalry game against Oklahoma in Dallas and was up-and-down for the rest of the year, showing flashes of brilliance in certain spots while struggling at other points. This inconsistency came to a head in the SEC Championship Game, where a poor performance in a 22-19 overtime loss to Georgia prompted fans on social media to call for Manning to start in the CFP.
With his draft projections plummeting to the second round or even lower, some speculated on the possibility of Ewers entering the transfer portal and spending his last season of collegiate eligibility elsewhere. However, the Southlake product appears to be dead set of turning his pro dreams into a reality in 2025.
With Ewers and Manning's future plans reportedly settled, the Longhorns can better focus on their first-round matchup against Clemson, where Austin native Cade Klubnik will return home to try to take down his hometown program. Manning is bound to take a few snaps at some point in this high-stakes encounter and win or lose, Horns fans will walk away knowing that his time as the Texas starter is imminent.
