Former Georgia RB Sony Michel Announces Retirement
Former Georgia running back and Super Bowl champion, Sony Michel, announced his retirement from the NFL just five years after being drafted by the New England Patriots.
Michel, 28, was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, who also drafted his former UGA teammate Isaiah Wynn at pick number 23. While with the Patriots, Michel picked up his first Super Bowl victory against the Los Angeles Rams.
Following his stint with New England, Michel joined the Los Angeles Rams, where he won his second Super Bowl with former UGA quarterback Matthew Stafford, and then played for the L.A. Chargers during the 2022 season. During his five-year career, Michel rushed for 3,342 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns while hauling 56 catches for 439 yards and two tugs.
Sony Michel was a special running back for the Bulldogs, sharing the backfield with Pro Bowler Nick Chubb. Michel is known for his takeover performance during the 2017 Rose Bowl victory over Oklahoma that sent the Georgia Bulldogs to the national championship game.
Although Michel's career was not lengthy, this is how many careers for NFL running backs turn out. The former Bulldog will be hanging up his cleats for the final time as a two-time Super Bowl champion.
