Khalil Mack and the Chicago Bears D/ST start the season where they finished — at No. 1
The Chicago Bears will look to do something in 2019 that's not easy — repeat as the No. 1 fantasy defense/special teams (D/ST). The Bears were the best in the NFL last season when it came to takeaways (36), were able to get to the quarterback consistently (50 sacks, tied for third), and didn't give up many points (17.7 ppg). Put it all together and that's a recipe for fantasy goodness from a D/ST.
But can Khalil Mack and company do this again? While no one is expecting Chicago's defense to take a major step backward in 2019, simply duplicating the number of turnovers they generated (including a league-high 27 INTs) is a lot to expect. And let's not forget that there's a new coordinator (Chuck Pagano replaces Vic Fangio) that will be calling the shots.
That doesn't mean the Bears still aren't the No. 1 fantasy D/ST entering this season, it just means don't reach for this unit in your draft banking on a repeat. Besides, Chicago wasn't anywhere near the top of these rankings this time last year, which means it's entirely possible that another D/ST, perhaps one that's not on anyone's radar right now, winds up being fantasy's No. 1 unit when all is said and done.
