Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet: Defensive Back Rankings 2020 - Derwin James

Derwin James Jr. is one of the top do-it-all DBs when it comes to fantasy appeal.

Similar to linebackers, the best approach when it comes to drafting defensive backs in fantasy football leagues that include Individual Defensive Players (IDPs) is to put a premium on versatility.

By that I mean there are some DBs who are tackling machines, there are some who are elite ball hawks, and then are even a select few that have a knack for getting to the quarterback. So it makes sense that the premium DBs are the guys who make plays regardless of where they happen to be on the field.

Derwin James Jr. definitely falls into that category, as evidenced by his 118 tackles (third among DBs), two interceptions, three forced fumbles, and two sacks last season. With James' ability to be used in a variety of roles and his nose for the ball, it's no stretch to expect some of his counting stats to increase in 2022, especially if he can stay on the field. He missed two games last season and has had to deal with a variety of injuries during his career.

There are others in the same mold as James, namely Kenny Moore II, Antoine Winfield Jr., Jeremy Chinn, Harrison Smith, and Minkah Fitzpatrick, but don't forget about the elite ball hawks either. Trevon Diggs was a quarterback's nightmare all season, recording 11 interceptions and credited with 21 passes defended. But he will be hard-pressed to repeat that level of production, and he also had two touchdowns to pad his fantasy scoring, which isn't supported by a significant number of tackles (52 total).

There are plenty of appealing defensive backs for IDP leagues this season. In the end, it just may come down to what type of category production you want out of your DBs.
