If you are in a fantasy football league that includes Individual Defensive Players (IDPs), the defensive linemen (DL) that are most appealing are typically those that fill up one particular category — sacks.
But last year showed us that DLs can be productive even if they don't rack up a bunch of sacks. Consider that among the top 10 scorers at the position in 2019, half of those registered fewer than 10 sacks.
That doesn't mean that sack artists still aren't valuable, however. Danielle Hunter was the No. 1 scorer among DLs last season and he did collect 14.5 sacks, a total surpassed by only Cameron Jordan (15.5). But Hunter also was credited with 70 total tackles (52 solo). Only three other linemen had more. Not surprisingly, two of them (Cameron Heyward and Sam Hubbard) are among the top 15 options entering the 2020 season.
And following Hunter at the top are play-wreckers Joey Bosa, Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald. Each not only reached double-digit sacks last season (Garrett doing so in 10 games because of his suspension), they also forced their share of turnovers. Jordan, Calais Campbell, and J.J. Watt also fall into the defensive playmaker category and figure to be popular picks.
Youth also could be served this year up front with the most recent No. 2 picks in the draft — Nick Bosa and Chase Young — sitting just outside of the top 10.
