Fantasy Football Draft Strategy: Hunter Renfrow Offers Great Value as a Wide Receiver

The Las Vegas playmaker should benefit from the addition of Davante Adams.

Reflection is an excellent part of improving your draft decisions to help construct better fantasy football rosters. In August, I drafted over 160 teams in various formats. I settled for Hunter Renfrow in some drafts as my WR4 while not feeling like I landed an edge. Looking back on last season, he finished 10th in wide receiver scoring (260.50 fantasy points) in PPR formats. Renfrow was a late target of mine in 2021, and he helped win some leagues.

The addition of Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders’ offense will take away some targets, but at the same time, Derek Carr should move the ball better with scoring chances in the passing game. Tight end Darren Waller has wobbled this month in drafts due to a lingering hamstring injury while also hiring a new agent (Drew Rosenhaus). His earning window for his next big contract is short as he’ll turn 30 in September.

New Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels comes from the Patriots’ system that created excellent opportunities for their slot receivers, with Tom Brady behind center.

Wes Welker

  • 2007 – 112/1,175/8
  • 2008 – 111/1,165/3
  • 2009 – 123/1,348/4
  • 2010 – 86/848/7 (11 games)
  • 2011 – 122/1,529/9
  • 2012 – 118/1,354/6

Julian Edelman

  • 2013 – 105/1,056/6
  • 2014 – 92/972/4
  • 2015 – 61/692/7 (nine games)
  • 2016 – 98/1,106/3
  • 2017 – Injured
  • 2018 – 74/850/6 (12 games)
  • 2019 – 100/1,117/6

Last year, Renfrow caught 103 of his 128 targets for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. He had a highlight run between Week 12 and Week 14 (8/134, 9/102, and 13/117/1). His chain-mover profile ties into exactly what McDaniels wants to do with his offense and an elite WR1 should give him more spacing in the opponent’s secondary. In addition, Renfrow is tough to defend over the short areas of the field while offering sneaky speed at times in the deep passing game.

I have him projected to catch 79 passes for 922 yards and seven touchdowns, but he will be upgraded to WR2 status in my final update coming out on Monday. The Raiders lack a viable WR3. So I will be shifting some of Waller’s targets to Renfrow as I trust him more in 2022.
