Many running backs have already been ruled out for Week 3, so at least fantasy owners don't have to play the waiting game for them. Joe Mixon hurt his knee in Week 2’s Thursday night game and needed a scope, so he’s out for Week 3 (look for Giovani Bernard to step up in his place). Darren Sproles and Jay Ajayi are both out for the Eagles (Corey Clement should be a RB2). Devonta Freeman is out for another week, leaving Tevin Coleman to carry the workload for another week. Marlon Mack is out again, which means Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins will be the running backs for Indianapolis. Dalvin Cook also is out, giving Latavius Murray a chance to show what he can do. And then there's Le’Veon Bell, who still hasn’t reported. If you are a frustrated Bell owner, I hope you were able to get James Conner before his value skyrocketed.
For the key RBs that are listed as questionable, be sure to check the inactive report before game time to make sure they are active before putting them into a fantasy lineup. Also be sure to check the QB/TE and wide receiver injuries.
Note: All games are Sunday, Sept. 23 and times are ET.
Leonard Fournette (hamstring), RB, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans, 1 p.m.
After putting in limited practices this week, it seems that Fournette may be able to return on Sunday. He missed Week 2, but the reports leading up to that game made it seem that he was close. Given that he did get in practice time and another week to recover, expect Fournette to be active. The Titans give up the fourth-fewest fantasy points to running backs, so it’s not going to be an easy matchup. If Fournette is active, he’s a RB2. UPDATE: According to Adam Schefter, Fournette will not play today.
LeSean McCoy (ribs), RB, Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
After McCoy got crushed by his own center in Week 2, he got up gingerly. The injury turned out to be cracked rib cartilage, which is painful. He practiced in a non-contact jersey this week, and he’ll likely have a protective vest to wear when he does get back on the field. It will be a game-time call to see if he’s active, but between the terrible matchup and the injury, this should be a reason to sit McCoy (and any Bills running back).
Corey Clement (quad), RB, Philadelphia Eagles vs. Indianapolis Colts, 1 p.m.
With Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles already ruled out, fantasy owners are rushing to the waiver wire to pick up Clement. To find out he is on the injury report is a little disconcerting. However, the quad injury that Clement is listed with does not appear to impact his playing status. Be aware, that players that are added to the injury report on Fridays should be monitored. Be sure that he is active on Sunday.
T.J. Yeldon (ankle), RB, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans, 1 p.m.
Yeldon filled in for Leonard Fournette when he missed Week 2. Yeldon missed Wednesday’s practice, but returned for limited sessions on Thursday and Friday. It’s possible the Jags may hold him out of this game, but if Fournette is active, Yeldon won’t have much of a role anyway. It seems that Fournette will play, so even if Yeldon is active, leave him on the bench. Hold onto him as a Fournette handcuff, but don’t start him in Week 3.
