The first position most fantasy managers look at when setting their Week 1 lineups is quarterback. Perhaps it is because it’s often atop the roster on most sites. Often, teams only have one viable quarterback on their roster, so it's an easy decision for Week 1, at least. However, for those that play in a two-quarterback league or a superflex league, it may be a tough choice.
The 2021 season poses additional challenges. We are seeing a changing of the guard as Drew Brees and his contemporaries exit stage left while the new crop moves in, including a number of rookies this year who have already been named starters. But we have yet to see them throw a single pass in an actual NFL game that counts in the standings.
Despite that, I’ve got Trevor Lawrence one slot higher than the ECR (Expert Consensus Rankings) and as a viable QB1 this week. But that has a lot more to do with the Jaguars taking on the charade of an NFL team known as the Texans.
Two other quarterbacks I like more than the ECR this week are Ryan Tannehill and Jimmy Garoppolo. I don’t see the latter starting much more than a dozen games this season, but the fact is he is starting this week. And against Detroit, I can see Jimmy G having an absolute field day.
Meanwhile, folks just don’t realize how good Tannehill could be this week. Many downgraded him because of his recent COVID status, but he has been cleared and is expected to be ready to go. Tannehill was the eighth-best fantasy quarterback last year and that was before the Titans added Julio Jones. Furthermore, the Titans are hosting the Cardinals, a defense that recorded just 11 interceptions last year, tied for the 20th in the league. Tannehill is a quarterback many might be deliberating on this week, but unless you have one from that top tier, he is a definite start for me.
