Aaron Rodgers has been a back-end top-10 fantasy QB this season and he has a tough matchup this week with San Francisco
Aaron Rodgers' place in my Week 12 fantasy quarterback rankings probably sticks out like an Amish couple at an appliance store. But if we take a moment to consider all the variables, the latter will continue to be the stranger occurrence.
Let's start with the matchup this week. Even Gabe Gabriel likely has nightmares about Rodgers facing the 49er defense this weekend. San Francisco is allowing the fewest passing yards per game — a microscopic 142.5. Even more troubling for us in the fantasy football industry, the 49ers are the second stingiest defense in terms of fantasy points allowed to QBs this year.
But is it possible that Rodgers might becoming a ...(gasp)... "game manager?" If we take out the two injury-plagued seasons in 2017 and '13, Rodgers is on pace to have his fewest pass attempts since the 2010 season. For those of you not keen to the yellow and green, 2010 was the last time the Packers were in the Super Bowl. Coincidence? Perhaps. But if you watch Rodgers this year, he is slinging the ball far less than he has in the past. But his yards per attempt have increased. Rodgers' Packers are putting up similar passing yards per game but doing so while throwing the ball less.
Could this be because of the decimation of the Packers' injury-ravaged WR corps and/or the ascension of Aaron Jones? Sure. And with Davante Adams now seemingly at full health, we could definitely see the Packers put the ball back in the hands of Rodgers instead of the running game. Rodgers still gives us a very high floor, worthy of QB1 status. But his ceiling has fallen a story or two. Throw in the tough matchup and Rodgers barely cracks the QB1 territory this week.
Teams on bye: Arizona, Kansas City, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota
