One thought quickly struck me as I was reviewing my Week 11 fantasy tight end rankings: "The position is a mess!" Last year, both Travis Kelce and Zach Ertz produced enough fantasy points (Athlon scoring) to finish as borderline top-20 options among non-quarterbacks. George Kittle wasn't too far behind them as all three went well over 200 fantasy points. Care to guess where those players rank this year?
It's ugly, let's just say that. The No. 1 tight end right now in fantasy points is Austin Hooper and he will miss some time because of a sprained MCL. Kelce is second but he's more of a borderline top-25 option among pass catchers while Ertz and Kittle are both well off of last year's pace (and Kittle also is dealing with an injury).
After Kelce in the current TE pecking order is Darren Waller (or Mark Andrews depending on scoring). Compared to the other pass catchers, Waller is sandwiched between DJ Moore and John Brown. Neither wide receiver has been horrible this year, but to put it in perspective they have combined three touchdowns, which just happens to be the same number Waller has.
Daily fantasy players, please note that Waller is my top tight end for this Sunday as both Hunter Henry and Kelce play on Monday night. And I like Waller, but that is more because Cincinnati can't stop anyone from putting up stats right now. And those are the best options. Heaven help you if you have to start guys like Vance McDonald or even Jared Cook at TE this week.
