A week from now we will look back at my Week 5 fantasy football wide receiver rankings and somebody is going to look pretty stupid. It could be the Expert Consensus Rankings (ECR), who are obviously treating Michael Thomas as of Tuesday night like a no-play. Or it's going to be me who elevated him 59 spots this week because I think he does play.
He was nearly a game-time decision this past week and he did participate in a couple of practices leading into that contest. The fact that New Orleans plays Monday night also gives him one additional day to rest/heal. Of course, the fact that he plays Monday night also means he's going to be a stress point for his owners who won't know whether to start him or someone else who plays on Sunday. I suspect Thomas plays.
And if Michael Thomas plays, you start him. We can throw out the 42-10 laugher against Carolina in Week 17 last year. In the 16 other games he played, Thomas either scored or was targeted at least eight times. He's a sure-fire WR1 when he plays. And yes, the Chargers D is gushing with talent, but they're also in the bottom half of preventing fantasy points to WRs because their secondary is a little banged up and missing a couple of key pieces. I also want to remind you that this week's game is in New Orleans, where we know Drew Brees has put up the majority of his huge games. I think Thomas plays and easily returns to WR1 numbers this week.
