Blackhawks right winger Kris Versteeg wasn’t even supposed to be playing in game one of the Stanley Cup Finals. On Monday he had his first child, and he hadn’t played since Game 3 of the Conference Finals on May 21. However, left-winger Bryan Bickell was sidelined with an upper body injury that freed up a spot for Versteeg.

In the second period, Vertseeg was fighting for the puck to the left of the Lightning net with two defenders. After not gaining possession, he skated away in front of the goal, but was blocked off by one of the defenders. He then tripped into the goalie, with his face smashing into the right post, sending the net out of its place holding.

Then to add insult to injury, officials pinned Versteeg with goalkeeper interference, a two-minute penalty that gave the Lightning a power play.
