The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.
With that in mind, August 4 is a day in which a 300th win and 3,000th hit were recorded on the same day and Nolan Ryan put Robin Ventura in the most memorable headlock in sports history.
1911: Washington Senators pitcher Herman Schaefer stole first base from second base against the Chicago White Sox at National Park. The strategy behind Schaefer's move was to set up a double steal so the runner on third base could steal home. His strategy didn't work and it resulted in a rules clarification stating that no baserunner can run the bases backwards.
1974: Richard Petty won the Purolator 500 at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.
1985: Chicago White Sox pitcher Tom Seaver recorded his 300th win with a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. On the West Coast, California Angels first baseman Rod Carew got his 3,000th hit off of Minnesota Twins pitcher Frank Viola in a 6-5 win at Anaheim Stadium.
1993: After getting hit with a pitch by Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan, Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura charged the mound at Arlington Stadium. Ryan responded by putting Ventura in the headlock and hitting him until the fight was broken up. Ventura was ejected, while Ryan stayed on the mound and finished the game, a 5-2 win.
2002: Bill Elliott won the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
2006: "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" was released in movie theaters. The Will Ferrell racing comedy grossed $163 million.
