Pick 6: Our Favorite Things for August

Live better with a few of our favorite things

In each issue of Athlon Sports & Life, we pick six of our favorite things. They may be books, automobiles, gear, booze, apparel or whatever happens to be awesome. Here's what made our shortlist this month:

Nissan GT-R50

Let's be clear, there's no scenario where the average guy gets his hands on this muscled-up Godzilla. But that doesn't mean you can't drool over it. It boasts a 3.8-liter V6 engine that cranks out a whopping 720 horses, thanks in part to some added pop from two turbochargers. The car itself is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the GT-R (in 2019) and to ItalDesigns (this year), who collaborated to create this work of road-chewing art. No more than 50 will be built and each will be tailored to its specific owner. Here's a look at it on the track.

Estimated at over $1 million gt-r50.nissan

Rabbit Charger Duo

Rabbit Charger Duo

This charger is more than just a pretty face. It secures quickly and easily (just remove the standard faceplate on your electrical outlet and push this on) to your current plug in and allows you to charge two Android units at once. For $10 extra, you can get swappable charging tips, allowing you to connect your iPhone as well. But the best part is its 28-inch retractable cable that hides away with the push of a button. That means no more dangling and potentially tangling charging cords. As a bonus, it has an ambient light that makes it easy to find at night.

Hypervolt

Hypervolt

This handheld cordless massager packs some serious punch, despite only weighing 2.5 pounds. We put it through its paces, testing out all three speed settings (up to 3200 RPM), which increase in intensity and allow you to customize the vibration for the body part you're targeting. To further aid in those specific areas, there are four interchangeable head attachments. It's powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts up to 3 hours per charge. Perhaps the most astounding thing about the Hypervolt is how quietly it goes about its business, humming along at a whisper compared to most other hand-held massagers. Whether you're a serious athlete or a weekend warrior, this well-built device (man, it's solid) will help relieve muscle pain, increase blood flow and improve your range of motion.

The Bourbon Country Cookbook: New Southern Entertaining

This book covers a lot of ground in its 200-plus pages. It starts with a history lesson on America's favorite whiskey (that's bourbon, if you hadn't guessed) and rolls into cocktail tips and unique takes on classics like the Mint Julep and the Old Fashioned. From there it takes you through chapters on "Small Bites" (try the Deviled Eggs with Country Ham recipe), then to "Brunch" (we suggest the Bourbon Maple-Glazed Bacon), and later touching on "Vegetables," "Barnyard Bounty" and "Sweet Endings," among others. In all, there are 95 recipes featured throughout this book that's ripe with beautiful photography and easy-to-follow instructions. It's a true must-have for those who have a passion for Southern food...and bourbon.

Traeger Ranger

Traeger Ranger Pellet Grill

This travel-sized grill (although it does weigh 60 pounds) features an eight-pound hopper capacity allowing for longer cooks with larger cuts of meat. That's right, bring on some ribs. It also features Traeger’s new Digital Arc Controller, allowing temperatures to be set in five-degree increments for precise temperature control. It even includes a Keep Warm Mode so food is “hot-off-the-grill” no matter when it's served.
